V *1 While speedlights are useful for fast action shots, this unusual prize winner from the Graftex Photo Contest by Carmen Reporto shows how action can be stopped with ordinary flash and a shutter speed of 1/1000 second. WHAT ABOUT SPEEDLIGHTS? The photographic world has sud-| tlenly become extremely interested in high-speed flash lighting units.' In the past year more than sixty , c .v.panlea have offered this equip j ment for sale. High-speed flash units offer two advantages. They give an extremely short flash of light which will freeze almost any kind of motion. Unlike conventional flash bulbs, each tube is good for hundreds or possibly thousands of Hashes. There is no nuisance of carying a big package of bulbs And if you take a great many flash pictures, the cost of each flash is considerably reduced over a period of time. There are also a number of dis advantages. Present units do not generate very much light. They are roughly comparable in brilliance to midget flashbulbs. The initial cost of a unit is rather high. The power supply, weighing generally at least ten pounds, Is a bulky addition to your picture-making equipment. Also, like an auto battery', the equip ment may not give satisfactory - per formance if not used and recharged regularly. Brcokside News H. C. Rutherford Ltd two daugh j tors, Madeleine and Shannon, j are visiting Daytona Beach, Fla. i Tiiey will return January 1. Mr. and Mrs. Emanuel Bowers j had us their guests the Innabin ett family and also the Clinton i family. Little Claudia Lytle spent Mon day with Mrs. Margaret Long. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Howard Lytle. Miss Betty Forney spent several j days with her family here. She came home Xmas eve. Miss Dorothy Lawton spent the holidays with her parents. Mr. and Mrs. S. J. Lawton. She is a stu dent of the Union university of Richmond, \'a. Mr. and Mrs. Goran Flacks had as their guest a daughter from Plainfield, N. J., and another daughter and son-in-law of Cant on. N. C., Mr. and Mrs. Lonnie Smith and Miss Mary- \Y. Dixon. For the closing of the year de : spite the snow the Brookside A.M.K. Church School was enjoyed by all. Several visitors attended. Everybody in Brookside en joyed the Community sing Sunday night by Dave Jones and a Choral , group of this section. Miss Lizzie Briscoe spent Xmas with her brother, Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Briscoe. They spent Sunday | with their brother in Rutherford j ton. Miss Lueile Forney had as her dinner guest her brother Claude and a couple of nephews and j friends Sunday, December 26. jFROM CUBA Miss Sara Equaraus of Havana, i Cuba, who is attending YV.C.T.C. jin Cullowhee spent Christmas week with her roommate, Celeste | Sabiston. j The high speed at which these lights operate has importance for ‘ certain types of special photogra phy. but it is not necessary for the great bulk of picture making if your camera Is equipped with a good fast shutter. In fact., many photog raphers feel that It spoils the pic torial quality by stopping action too completely. Considering the high cost of these units and the expense of new flash ; tubes in the event of breakage or other damage, there is no economy over the use of regular flashbulbs unless you use at least a thousand bulbs a year. This Is well over the average amateur consumption. If the casual photographer Is look ing for efficient lighting at low cost. ‘ he will do best, at present time, to stick to conventional flash equip ment. Those who need the high speed offered by the speed units or would enjoy the convenience of ob taining many flashes from one bulb may feel that the expense and other disadvantages of these outfits can be outweighed by their unique ad i vantages. *Graltx Pkot& Dirtctv* Scholastic Level Shows Increase The general scholastic achieve ments of Gardner-\Yebb college students are on the increase, ac cording to a recent survey con ducted by the college Department of Guidance. From these tests a median score for each class was obtained and filed for permanent reference. The survey reveals that the median score for the freshman class of 1945 was 74.6. For the first-year class of 1946, the score was 76.0 . The median score for the 1947 freshman group was 76.5, and the freshman class for this year has a score of 80.
